The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a near-normal South West Monsoon in the country. However, to meet exigencies in case it gets delayed, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has decided to install emergency pumps at Puttamgandi which will ensure uninterrupted water supply from Nagarjunasagar to the city

The decision was taken following instructions from the Irrigation Department. Earlier, the Water Board had appealed to the department to maintain the water level at 510 feet in Nagarjunasagar project. Recently, the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) had issued water release order to meet the drinking water and irrigation requirements of both TS and AP, as a result, the Irrigation Department took measures to maintain the 510 feet level to the maximum possible period

However, in case of delayed monsoon, the Irrigation wing has instructed Water Board to make emergency pumping arrangements to draw water below Minimum Draw Down Level of Nagarjunasagar up to 505 feet water level as was done in the previous years. Accordingly, the Water Board is installing 10 pumps and an electrical substation to operate the pumps, with a cost of nearly Rs 2.8 crore. Officials said that about five km power cable lines have to be laid and the pumps have to be overhauled for the purpose

It will take anywhere between 25 and 30 days to complete these works and tenders have been called to execute the works. At present, the water level in the project is 511.5 feet and with the current reserves, there will be no need for any emergency pumps till May end, said a senior official from HMWSSB

The pumps will be operated only if there is a delayed monsoon. This summer, there is no water supply problem for the city,” assured the official. At present, the water board is drawing 470 mgd (million gallons per day) water from four sources, including Osman Sagar, Himayath Sagar, Nagarjunasagar and Yellampally Reservoirs. Of these, 20 mgd is being drawn from Osmansagar, 8 mgd from Himayathsagar, 270 mgd from Nagarjunasagar (River Krishna) and 172 mgd from Yellampally (River Godavari)
